“OPE-N’s productions connect by the fact that they are all pushing the boundaries of what opera can be, breaking out of the well-known and conventional frame and bringing very different and always extremely talented artists together” Festival director
OPE-N is an award-winning and interdisciplinary opera company that was founded by artistic director Louise Beck in 1996 in Copenhagen. The aim has always been to explore new formats for contemporary opera, and to create site-specific performances that address relevant social issues and meet the audience in eyelevel. In collaboration with international partners, OPE-N has produced largescale opera productions in Asia, Australia and Scandinavia, while their smaller productions are touring in North Amerika and Europe.
Artistic director Louise Beck: “My artistic work begins with a simple fascination: How our cultural heritage and political structures shape not only the world around us, but also our inner lives. I am drawn to opera because this fantastic artform is expansive enough to hold these dual perspectives—the personal and the societal view—at the same time. In my practice, I revisit stories from the past to understand the present, creating large-scale productions that illuminate the forces shaping contemporary identity. At the same time, I explore the intimacy of everyday life through close-up portrayals that foreground the emotional realities we all share.
To realize this vision, I bring together leading artists, who are eager to push the boundaries of opera alongside me. Together we liberate the artform from the conventions and hierarchies, that have historically constrained it, and craft immersive and groundbreaking experiences where the distance between stage and audience disappears. Our work is deeply human and celebrate diversity and all that we have in common.”
